The first visit to a swimming pool with a baby or toddler is a little adventure – for your child as well as for you. You might feel a bit nervous, pack your bag with extra care, and wonder if you've really thought of everything. This mix of excitement and uncertainty is completely normal, because a relaxed start begins with good preparation.

Before getting into the water, your child should be healthy. No colds, no infections – and for babies, the umbilical cord should be fully healed. Many parents begin when their baby is around three to four months old. The exact age is less important than ensuring your baby feels well and comfortable. Timing also plays an important role: a well-rested and fed baby (but not immediately after a large meal) will enjoy the experience much more.

At the swimming pool, safety is the top priority. Organizations such as the German Lifesaving Association (DLRG) emphasize that children should never be left unattended – not even for a moment. Your child should always be within arm’s reach. Swimming aids can offer support, but they can never replace your full attention. Especially during the first visit, the goal is not to achieve anything, but to build trust.

The conditions are equally important. A water temperature of around 32 to 34 degrees Celsius is ideal for babies. The first time in the water should not last longer than 20 to 30 minutes. Watch your child closely: if they start shivering, become fussy, or seem tired, it’s time to get out. Afterwards, wrap them up warmly, cuddle them, and give their body time to warm up again.

In the water, everything should begin playfully. You might sit with your child at the edge of the pool, letting their feet touch the water first. Speak calmly, smile, and then slowly move forward – hands, tummy, shoulders. Maintain eye contact and provide reassurance through your voice and presence. It’s not about submerging or structured exercises, but about creating positive experiences. If your child laughs, splashes, or looks around curiously, that’s a wonderful start.
